My experience with Royal Weddings

Like much of the world, I was enamored with the wedding of Charles and Diana. My plans to stay up all night and watch the wedding were interrupted by the birth of our first daughter.

I came home from the hospital the day it was going to be replayed, but I arrived home to a surprise baby shower from our youth group kids. (My husband was a youth pastor.)

It was super thoughtful, BUT . . . I was a bit overwhelmed and I missed the wedding, again.

For the Royal Wedding of Andrew and Sarah, we were in Scotland with a group of high school students. The church we were working with, wanted to plan a cultural experience for this gaggle of American kids. So they rented a telly and cooked up a wonderful bunch of Scottish treats. (millionaire shortbread . . . YUM.)

It was super thoughtful, BUT . . . the rental company set the television up on a big stage and when the students opened the theater type curtains, the television came crashing to the floor. We had to pay 300 pounds (around $500) to the rental company. At least this time I saw the wedding.

This Friday, will be the Royal Wedding of William and Kate. Hmm, I wonder what the day will hold for me . . . *smile*

Are you getting up early to watch the Royal Wedding?

  2. I hope that all goes well this time around! I will be working this time around, so I will not be watching it. I will buy the People special issue when it comes out...or at least browse it in the checkout line at Kroger!

  4. crunch. It's going to be that early? Wait, how early is it going to be? I'm on the east coast, an hour ahead of you...
I watch Charles and Diana and, silly goose am I, have grieved over her death like I knew her.
I'm going to do a blog entry on William and Kate and ask everyone who watches to pray for them, their marriage, their children to come, etc. Wouldn't that be wonderful? To know they are being tucked into prayer by so many...

  6. I'll be watching. I have a group of college girls coming over around 4 (?) or 5 in the morning for scones, cucumber sandwiches, and tea. I've got plastic tiaras and those huge ring pops for all the girls so they can get into it at that hour. Should be fun!

  7. I was 10 years old for Charles and Di's wedding. I didn't even know Fergie's wedding was televised. I'll probably end up watching William's on a rerun or something because I'll be headed out of town that day.

I just hope their marriage has a better outcome than the last two royal weddings!

  11. Oh Glenda,

I remember waking up at 5 a.m. to watch Diana and Charles get married on a crummy old black and white TV. I think I sighed my way through the entire thing. So of course, I will watch William and Kate's wedding.

My hubby said he couldn't figure out what the big deal is, but I told him that it's every girl's dream to marry a prince! Our world is in such turmoil and there's bad news everywhere we look. But this is the chance to participate in a sort of fairy tale on a scale none of us will probably ever experience.

I sure hope nothing comes between you and this wedding, Glenda!

  13. Good luck on catching the wedding in real time...however, you'll have to get up at 3 a.m. in Chicago if you want to be in on the very beginning...the roll along the parade route...that moment when Kate emerges from the car to reveal her dress...oh, they'll replay and replay it...you're sure to get in on SOMETHING!

  16. Perhaps you should watch from bed :-). I'll be watching as well and here that means I'll be up at a ridiculous hour. Ah, well. That's the price of fairy tales. Have a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary

  17. I don't remember if I watched Diana and Charles weddding live or if only in re-runs. I do know that I watched it many times! I don't recall watching the ceremony for Andrew and Sarah at all. I will watch this wedding but not sure I will start at the wee hours in the morning! Can't wait to see the dress =)

  21. Too funny ! Wondering what this Friday will bring for you?! In Korea, a British friend is hosting an expat party for all to come watch the Royal Wedding at her house !. All bringing a platter of English food. Can't wait !!

  22. Oh dear....I hope you get to watch this wedding - the excitement is certainly building up here in London. We even have champagne and cupcakes here at the office this afternoon. I agree with Julie - enough suffering in the world, a day of fairy tale is just what we need. I'm fortunate enough to live about 15 minutes away from where the action will be, so I'll be joining the thousands of wellwishers on the street, oping to get a glimpse of the future Queen! Fingers crossed the weather plays along...

  24. I lived in the UK when Andrew and Sarah were married (my dad was in the military) and I remember watching it all day wide-eyed. I didn't watch William and Kate's because I wanted to sleep. Haha
