BALANCE: with a little help from Coach Phil Jackson (really!). 31 days of Christmas Wonder (day 3)

I have a question for you. What are the first three words that come to your mind when you think of preparing for Christmas?

word one  __________

word two  __________

word three __________

We all want words like
peace
joy
fun
but if we are honest with ourselves the first words that come to mind may be
stress
debt
exhaustion.

I recently read a great strategy from the world of sports - basketball, to be exact. You might wonder what advice retired LA Lakers' Coach, Phil Jackson, could offer busy women looking for Christmas wonder.

Coach Jackson recommends the perfect balance of three things in his LEADERS TRIANGLE OFFENSE.

And I propose to you, that the perfect month of December, the perfect Christmas season needs these  three things to maintain balance. (Our very own Christmas triangle offense.)

ARE YOU CURIOUS?

Here they are . . .
WORK

QUIET

FUN

Come back tomorrow and we will talk about WORK. (it will be fun)

  3. My first thoughts were presents, cards (and Christmas newsletter), and baking (but then I thought, decorating.) All of these = busy Mom! Glad to hear your thoughts on how to keep the balance!

  4. My 3 words were tree, gifts, and JESUS.

Eager to see what your triangle can do to help relieve the stress!

  5. Advent comes first to mind...candles and nativity cards ...

We sought to let Jesus claim Christmas years ago... as the girls were growing up we had things we made together.. watercoloring cards...painting little stick wise men marching over the hills beneath the stars. ....Advent, advent, let your little light shine...

  6. You had me going with your "subject"! Thanks to Phil and you I might just be headed for a stress free Christmas.

Re my egg dish. Omit the water bath and leave them in the oven until the yolk is hard and the white well set!!

    Best,

  7. P.S. I'm from the south where we ask for our eggs to be "sopping" i.e., the yolks runny enough to sop up with toast.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  9. My first word was decorations, which is WORK, yet FUN. And once I'm decorated I love to sit in the QUIET and marvel at the season!

  10. I just want to ignore that it is October and Christmas is right around the corner! I remember when you first posted about the 31 days...I am one of those people that get overwhelmed with too many ideas. I am not a decorator and I always feel inadequate in that department. I can't wait to read your posts!

  12. I'm so intrigued by this. You know, since I quit my job and we are living on less, I've been wondering how Christmas is going to play out. I'm really looking forward to your series!

  13. What fantastic advice. I could definitely use more of all three!

  14. My first thought was just that this will be our first Christmas without Mom. I have no idea what our "new normal" will be like. She made everything wonderful for the holidays. She did things that I don't know how to do. I guess I'm kind of wondering how many Christmases we will spend without her before the Lord graciously reunites us. There might be stress this year, but I doubt there will be much debt. We had already quit most of our Christmas spending, so doing it this year won't be a problem. Exhaustion remains to be seen. It will be interesting.

  15. Glenda, I am so, sooo sorry to hear about your storage boxes being stoles...ESPECIALLY your Christmas decorations. I would have cried my eyes out...but you're so right. Christmas times IS about memories - and those can be created. I LOVE this idea for a series. I will be glued to my seat throughout!!

  18. My three words would be busy, childish wonder (grands) and peace. Busy because it gets so crazy with "happenings." Childhood wonder because I love seeing Christmas through the eyes of the my grandchildren. Peace because that's how I feel when I relax with my family, reading the Christmas story and enjoying the fire. I'm going to enjoy your series.

  19. Glenda, this is great! Also, Ian loves that you made a Phil Jackson reference (even though he's not a fan of the Lakers)! Nice touch with the triangle offense. :)

    Thanks for the great thoughts.

  20. How terrible for you! Losing our stuff, especially our memorable stuff, is always terrible. I hate it when God lets that happen and then I see what kind of Christian I am -smile-. As I've gotten older, I think I can do without my stuff, except I don't want to; it brings me comfort...hmmm, maybe not so good, eh? -smile- and it all has memories attached.
My three words - family, Christ, love. Thistle Cove Farm has an "open table" policy; anyone who wants to eat, comes at meal time. Christmas is no different and, perhaps, the meal won't be all that special but the food will be plenty and good because the cellar, pantry, refrigerators and freezers are always full.
    Bless God!
