Praying Specifically

I have had a lot of jobs ... nurses aid, house cleaner, secretary for the Art Department at Biola, waitress at Sambos, hotel maid during the World's Fair in Spokane, church secretary, first grade teacher and more.

But when I decided in 2003, to go back to work, it had been many years since anyone had paid me for the work I did.  I wanted to help pay for the girls college expenses, but I was not sure what I wanted to do.

I asked my friend Kate to pray with me about it and I had a lot of specific requests. I wanted something:

               *very close to home
*active (not sitting at a desk)
                   *around people that I enjoy
*with flexibility (so I could still travel with Dave)
               *good pay

(Later, Kate told me that my requests were so specific and so many that she thought, "I do not think Glenda really wants to go back to work.")

But God knew my needs. One afternoon, a few months after we began praying, I drove through a strip mall a few blocks from our home. I noticed a new Panera just being built ... hmmm ... this might be just the ticket.

I grabbed an application and before long I had an interview with a gal from corporate.

She asked me about my years serving overseas with Dave on Royal Servants and "just happened" to be friends with a couple on our staff. So right away she understood the needs for flexibility in a ministry travel schedule.

And she hired me.

I found a job that matched everything on my list ... and that is how I became "Panera Girl."

ps. Of course, God does not always answer "yes" to all of my specific requests ... but I still ask.

What are you praying for?

  1. Guess what?!?! I was a waitress at Sambo's too! *smile*

This weekend I am praying for my husband and some friends that are on retreat - not the same retreat, but all at different retreats. My long term prayer is for my son, that he will stay focused, make good decisions and be able to discern and follow the Lord's path for his life. I am trying to remember that the Lord's path and my path just might not be the same. *sigh*

  2. There is something right and good, about asking specifically in relationship. YOu're right, it is not always that answer, but I think He wants us to ask!

  3. Hi Glenda - I think it is so important to be specific and also to be careful what you pray for. God may just give it to you :) Great post and great encouragement to be more focused in our prayers.
    God bless

  4. Right now I am praying for all of my strength to return and also for our good friend Laura's family (Decor to Adore)

  5. Oh, so many things are heavy on my heart today, Glenda. But I'm praying specifically for safety for my daughter as she leaves (in my van!) for spring break today. She and several girls are driving to Florida, and this mama is a little worried.

  6. God always answers, doesn't he? It may not always be exactly how we think he may but He Is Always Good!

We are praying for a home which will meet our specific needs. We have yet to find it....but in good time, we will! (did i really write that?....I'm not always that confidant!) God is good!

  7. I love praying specifically. But my prayers now are big general prayers...praying for the health and safety of our on-the-way baby (it is so easy to be overwhelmed by what-ifs when you're pregnant)...and praying for peace as we make some really big decisions about our future and the Marine Corps....I sometimes feel the only thing I am really good at is being anxious.

  8. Hi Glenda, just today I started on a Goals list so I could pray and plan specifically.
    Good post!

  9. I pray all over the place--first thing in the morning, last thing at night, doing laundry, driving, etc.. Today, I have been praying for those in harm's way of the terrible storms.

I got the book back. Thanks! Bring on the questions!!

  10. What a great post. It's really uplifting. Thank you!

  11. Congratulations! I think Panera's would be a great place to work.

  12. Thank you so much for sharing this. I pray constantly. It's just a part of my every day life. It usually involves praying for others...but recently I have been adding a prayer for myself. I am barely keeping my head above water and wonder how long I can continue with everything. I'm not complaining. It is all my own choice. I just wonder if I'm doing the right thing. I'm a believer in signs from hopefully he will send me a message soon! Is the Kate you talked about the artist? She sounds like a lovely person. Happy Weekend Glenda!

  13. So awesome... I am all about praying very specifically and watching God answer (or not ). He tells us to ask and so I do.

  14. What an encouraging post! I have some "big prayers" and you've just infused them with faith!

  15. I love this Glenda. I pray specifically also. I love to list my requests in my journal and then record how God answers. Sometimes I learn the most from the "no" or "wait" answers. I don't "wait" well, but I am learning. Praying specifically is helping me learn to live specifically and with purpose. Your blog always encourages me. Love ya sis! Ruthie

  16. You have given others a blueprint to follow Glenda. Great post.

5-1/2 years ago I prayed specifically. I was trying to recover from the severe trauma that had happened to my husband and trying to face the grieving process over the loss of my 15 y/o son.

I had been working 50-60 hours a week. Because of my mental status it was becoming overwhelming. I didn't think that job was "making a difference". I wanted to spend more time with my family and my husband.

So I prayed that I wanted a new job. I wanted it in Clay Center (where our sure church is); I wanted to have contact with patients again; I wanted it to be days and no week-ends; I wanted some flexibility (I have elderly parents 1100 miles away); I wanted to report to only 1 boss; I wanted NO employees.

A few weeks later I received a request from a nurse that I had worked with 20+ years before. She said "I'm going to retire. Not sure if it's in 3 months or a year. I think you would love this job. You would be good in this job, why don't you come and fill out an application".

Guess what - all my requests were in this job. What a blessing this has been.

  17. good for you!! I had a friend tell me our prayers should be very specific and very grand....I believe it!!

  18. Oh, but I love how God sees your needs and is faithful to meet them!

  19. I'm praying for a new job for my husband. A job with a bit more responsibility and no union to deal with. I'm praying for the job to be in a specific town. I'm praying for that job so we can find a good solid church (something we have been unable to find in the two years we have lived in this current location), and I'm praying for that job so I can actually have some friends. I have NO friends here. (And I mean NONE. Not just not many friends, NONE.)

  20. first...I LOVE Panera! just LOVE
    and of course He does!
LOVE this story of our Father and how He adores to answer
specifics...the little details of our stories...
    love you:)
    happy Tuesday
and I smile thinking you at Panera's....

Let's chat.
