Julius Meinl ... a little taste of Europe

Everyone in my family is using their passport this month ... except me. So, what is a girl to do?

Call my adventurous friend, Shelly. Off to Julius Meinl we went for our own European experience, just a few miles from my home. (no passport required)

beautiful dark wood

European style pastry

amazing cappuccino and coffee melange

Shelly was a blogging friend when I lived in Seattle, and she has welcomed me into her life here in Chicago with open arms.

We could already write a book, "The Adventures of Shelly and Glenda." How often I thank the Lord for her.

When was the last time you used your passport?

  3. Hmmm, we last used our passports in 2006, for an Alaskan cruise that ended in Vancouver. This post reminds me to renew our passports and while we are at it, to get new pictures...our current ones are horrible. We actually look like thugs.

  4. I have never had a passport...so I can't relate, but I love your idea and I will have to try it. My children, however, all own passports and use them...one son leaves in a week to Cambodia.

I think your creative idea is wonderful.

  6. Oh, Glenda, I don't even have one!
When I went to Canada and the Bahamas, it wasn't needed.
    Maybe some day =)

  9. Hi Glenda, O-oo, I keep wanting to go back to Chcago--I'll be adding a stop at J.M. to my list.

Last use of my passport? On mission trip to Zimbabwe 5 1/2 years ago. Awesome experience.

  10. fMy recent whirlwind trip to Techny allowed NO time for downtown Chicago - but this looks like a lovely, fun place. So glad you had an adventure, too! I will use my passport very soon as we're traveling to Florida (no, not there!) and then on to St. Thomas for a week. It think maybe it's been 3 years since we've used ours...

  11. Oh dear, it's been 3 years since we went to Norway and Iceland. How time flies...Hoping to get back across the pond to London soon...not before the Olympics, though. Or during.

  12. One of my goals for 2011 was to GET a passport, since I've never had one. Since I didn't meet that goal, I guess it automatically rolls over to this year, which means I have only eight more months in which to do it!

Sadly, I've only been off the North American continent to go to Hawaii, but I've been there twice, spending a week each on three islands. The last time I went to Vancouver, B.C. (in 2003 I think), it wasn't required, and the only time I was in Mexico was in 1969, when my mom, siblings and I all walked across the border to Tijuana. Does that even count as a foreign country visit?

Once I do get a passport, may I pick your brain about the best places to go and what to see there, etc? I'll have to make the most of whatever trip I take, as it will likely be the only one I'll have. You and your family were so very blessed to travel so much with Royal Servants--and other groups, too, I'm sure.

  14. Funny you should talk about passports today. I just went to the Federal Bldg. this morning to get my passport. Planning to use it on Monday for some much needed few days of R&R. Hooray. I always promised myself after getting my first passport when I was 20 that I would never live without a valid passport. In 2009 my passport expired & with all going on in life, I slipped on my goal to keep it always valid. So today was a great day, knowing that it will soon be in my pocket & ready to go at any time once again. Yay.

  15. I used my passport in
    January when my daughter
and I went to look at an
    art university in Vancouver.
Alas, it did not capture her
heart like it did mine : )

    I am SO looking forward
    to meeting both you and
    Shelly....maybe this summer??

    Happy Wednesday,
    xo Suzanne

  18. I last used my passport in 2007 for a missions trip to the southern part of Mexico. My heart longs to pull out my passport, board a plane and go back. The wonderful people there are like family.
