Preparing for the fast approaching train called ... THE HOLIDAYS

The next seven weeks are some of my favorite of the year.

My darling momHallie, taught me to love Thanksgiving and Christmas.  She grew up with absent parents who pulled it together for the holidays. So she loved them.

And, I also get my practical and simple side from her.
(thanks, mom) This will be our eighth Christmas, since we lost our mom to cancer. I miss her often and always the most at Christmas.

Before you know it, we will be roasting the turkey, then decking the halls

So, I am declaring tomorrow a:

pajama (my favorite pink and gray ones),

coffee/tea drinking,

Christmas music listening (Dave is away),

planning ... day!

One whole day, with nothing on my calendar. One whole day to:

plan our Thanksgiving menu (already bought my pre-brined turkey at Trader Joe's)

enjoy Christmas magazines

finish my gift list

order on.line presents (etsy love)

plan Christmas eve and Christmas day menus

plan Jenny's birthday here (gluten and sugar free, of course)

think about my 60th birthday (the past few years, I have planned exactly what I want to do on my birthday. Dave loves it, because he enjoys making my day special.

finalize our December calendar (concert at The Moody Church, outdoor community concert and coffee at Millennium park, kristkindl market, favorite Christmas movies, Les Miserables at the theater, visit State street Macy's, carol and lessons at our church, time with our borrowed charming kids)

Sounds like a perfect day to me. I think I will choose the first Christmas cd and head to bed early.

How are you preparing?

  3. I love your enthusiasm and inspiration. The holidays are difficult without our loved ones that have gone Home. I'm sorry. :( My heart understands some of your pain.

To be honest, I have planned NOTHING. We do know that we are going to my husband's grandparents for Thanksgiving. Beyond that, the holidays have just...happened...whether we want them to or not. Glenda, PLEASE keep writing inspiration for those of us who sort of dread this time of year.

Thank you and God bless! I love your ideas your way of planning. Perhaps little man and I will take some time aside from our schooling and plan the holidays are intentionally. :)

  5. Oh I think a WHOLE day just to play, dream and relax sounds divine! I need to dig out our Christmas music! Growing up, we always have a fabulous time with all the aunts/uncles and cousins at Grandma's house. No one wanted to miss! Since we married, we've only had two Thanksgivings with my side of the family, as we spend it with husband's family. Personally I miss it terribly. Maybe it's the memories that I miss.

Hmmmm, planning your own birthday? I've never done that, but mine is usually on Mother's Day. Maybe I should do that. I can't wait to read how your day went.

  8. i love the sound of this day! I have never done that much planning for the holidays all in one day!! My plan? Mostly overwhelmed at the thought of how can it be the holiday season already? My father-in-law has been in the hospital for 2 months -- locally here. (Most family is away.) It has been hard to do daily things much less fun extra things!Any tips on surviving the holidays with a loved one in crisis?

  9. Glenda, I had a Holiday Season epiphany last night...I want to be as intentional as possible with the holidays and be able to focus on the Reason (Christ's coming) and the Season (my children coming)....so, I'm going to take a hiatus from blogging--just post a picasa pic with a verse God's been speaking to me and call it good......You're the first to know.

I decided I cannot keep a full time job AND write AND give to ministry with the women and the kid's church AND volunteer AND actually slow down.......if I don't cut something out.

Your plan (s) sound fabulous--and Les Mis?? wow. You are blessed.

  10. Makes me excited for the Holidays! I always loved coming to your house this time of the year especially! It was magical! I'm spending December with my dad in Poland so it will be interesting and fun..maybe we'll even do a tree this year?!
    Miss you

  11. I think I am going to follow suit, Glenda! It sounds like a perfect day. I have plans swirling in my head but I need to start making lists.

Your December sounds booked. Don't you love all of the things Chicago has to offer? If you are talking about the Kris Kindle event in Daley Plaza, for years I never missed that as I worked across the street. Have you seen the lighting of the great big Christmas tree there? I'm also going to be spending a good deal of time downtown next month and I just love all the Christmas spirit in the air!

    XO,
    Jane

  12. I have pink jammies too, can I join you? Wouldn't we have fun sitting in our jams all day, planning and talking. You just wouldn't want to hear me singing the Christmas carols ..........maybe I should bring Scott along ............. or is just girls?

  13. Next year, I'll be joining you on this and it's sound like many more what to be with you on PJ day as well! What a great tradition you could start in our lives!!

  15. That is awesome! Enjoy your pajama day! Snuggle and relax...that's one of the tips I've been sharing with my readers... take a day off! Something! ... I am sorry for your loss... I can imagine time doesn't really make it any easier... Praise God for the Eternal Hope we have in HIM.... btw... hopefully you'll link up on Friday... I see you mentioned "coffee" here... would love to see your post there! Many hugs!

  16. Oh man, can I come over to your house that day? *grin* Seriously, I want a day like that. Peaceful, no stress, no deadlines, Christmas music, maybe a Christmas candle, and making lists. I adore lists! Sounds like a wonderful day to me! (Now be sure tp let me know if you want some company, okay??....)

Enjoy, my friend. And pray that we'll all get a day like that soon.

  18. We begin to celebrate tomorrow! My sweetheart and I are in charge of senior ministries at our church. Tomorrow is our monthly seniors luncheon - Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. We provide the turkey and potatoes and gravy - they bring the salads and desserts and whatever their hearts desire. Tomorrow afternoon I will sit with my feet up, probably be snuggled with my little dog and begin to make final plans for our small family Thanksgiving gathering this year. My dear, little eighty-nine year mother had a third heart attack this year and there have been family doings that make us realize we need to make it a quieter day than it would be if our kids and eight grandkids and cousin and hubby were all together this year. So, I will have an 'adult' dinner for five here at my home while our two children and their families share Thanksgiving with others. Love your idea of a day with nothing but Christmas music, jammies and planning - something special just for you!

  21. Sounds good to me! I'm working on Christmas ornament favors for the Women's Christmas Brunch at church...Dec. 1. 10 done, 30 more to go.....

  22. What an amazing idea! I absolutely love this, and I NEED a day like that. To be honest, I haven't given any thought to the holidays at all. When I'm teaching and feeling a little buried with my working life, it's really hard for me to shift gears and think about the holidays. Also, we're not going to be at home for either Thanksgiving or Christmas, so it's hard to think about decorating. Basically, I just don't have the energy for it right now.

But you have inspired me, dear friend (as always). I really need to get excited and pull it together because my girls are watching me and everyone around here deserves a fun, special, exciting holiday season together.

We're starting out by going to see Les Miserables on Sunday. (When are you going?) I'm trying to convince my husband to head downtown early so we can walk around and enjoy the lights.

  23. Ohh... it does sound like a perfect day! I hope it was as wonderful as it sounded like it would be! :)

  24. We are having our Christmas with my parents at Thanksgiving so I've been thinking Christmas for a while. And Emily has been sneaking Christmas cds in all the players since October. And inbetween the pumpkin rolls is date nut pinwheels, fudge and toffee. Our schedule didn't allow the Christmas decorations to come out of hiding yet--that's scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend.

Jammies are in my day, too, even though it's a cleaning and baking day, not planning--soft navy and white striped!

  25. Started with Thanksgiving, brother's coming...husband will soon be home from the hospital after knee replacement surgery so I've been rearranging and preparing the house for the following two months...not quite Christmas-y but I did manage to set up my Christmas tableau with a new angel tablet from An Englishman in L.A. I know she's a grave angel but she's now my Christmas angel which I've snapped into a floor easel next to my faux tabletop Christmas tree. It was an efficient way to get going early, lots of family coming to visit so a real Christmas tree might create much more of a debacle than we need :) I'll post about it on my blog eventually :)

  28. Ah, what an inspiration you are. I love this idea. I decided today that I would take today off. I put on Christmas music, lit some candles, stayed in my pjs (so far, it's only noon -ha) and I am itching like crazy to make something creative. Can't decide what that's going to be yet. I think I'm going to get the Christmas decorations out today. Hope your day was amazing. It's kind of nice to have a day all alone at home sometimes, isn't it.

  29. your day of jammies, tea and planning sounds wonderful. I am having folks over tomorrow...and keeping my friend's daughter for Thanksgiving...5 nights!!! I'm a crazy woman!
We're having a smallish pork roast, my home canned green beans, mashed potatoes and a pie or cake for dessert.
    Simple!
Then we're going to watch silly movies...chick flicks (If I've got any) and enjoy the day.

  30. Hi Glenda,
Hope you enjoyed your heavenly day. That sounds right up my alley!

I feel as if I can't even think about Christmas coming yet this year. How did it get to be November already? I am still writing October every time I have to write the date down... I try to enjoy Thanksgiving and not rush through it, but I think this weekend I am putting fall stuff away and move onto Christmas and winter. I got my cousin to chop down a birch tree yesterday so I could have the branches and the wood to make candles and use for decorating. I love how the bundles of branches make my house look. If only I could spend a week in my pajamas decorating and baking!

    Enjoy getting ready!
    Kate

  31. Happy, Happy Holidays to you! And Happy early birthday! Are we both December gals? We're going out of town this Thanksgiving but we'll be at beach rental so we do all the things that we would do in town except no shopping. We're at a coastal community that doesn't have much shopping.
