Winter in Chicago

Our first winter in Chicago (2011) we had 27" of snow in one day. To me, it feels like that is about the last real snow we have seen.

This year, and I am writing this on January 16, the only real winter/snow is on my fireplace mantel.

Has winter arrived at your house?

  1. O yes, here is snow, snow, snow in Holland ... I like it but when I am on my bike I am a bit afraid ...

  2. We've not had enough snow to cover the grass. There was a nice, all-day gentle rain last week that helped a lot. The farmers are beginning to worry about the lack of moisture.

  3. I wish we had snow! But true to Seattle weather, when it's wet, it's too warm to snow, and when it's cold, it's dry as anything. We're very cold and sunny, and so dry EVERYTHING has static electricity right now. Wet is coming, but we'll warm up before it gets here. :\

  4. Down here in the deep, deep, deep south, there's never been snow. When we lived a couple of hundred miles north (thought still in Florida), we had enough snow once to accumulate in my husband's motorcycle helmet, and growing in up central Florida, we did have flurries a time or two. As a child I always felt cheated at Christmas...all the songs about snow, Jingle Bells, I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas, and snow-themed decorations supported those feelings. As an adult, I finally got over it, and declared that I would decorate at Christmas without anything related to snow, and focus on the beauty God has put right under my feet. I can count the number of times I've experienced real snow with the fingers on one hand...and I can't say that any of them were made more enjoyable because of the snow...in fact, just the opposite. I do think that snow makes for beautiful pictures though.

  5. We had snow on Tuesday...today is sunny and I am going out for a walk. My son is in your city today on an interview...I am sure it seems cold to that Texas boy!!

  6. I know what you mean, Glenda. Almost every day I think about how weird it is that we really haven't had much snow in two winters. I have a feeling we're in for another February blizzard, which, to me, would be fun because I like a good blizzard. We do need the moisture, though.

  7. Since I'm in Chicagoland, it's about the same here. Just NW of it, we have a dusting of snow on the ground now. Fine with me since I'm not a lover of winter! Keep warm...

  9. Two years ago in Boston we had enough snow for last year and this year!
Last year - nothing; this year - one minor storm and the other day, 2-3 inches of wet snow...no sign of the snow as of this afternoon!

  10. When I lived in NYC, my home town, there was lots of snowie winters, and I loved them when I was in school as there was at least a couple of accasions when we were off from school, lol...I miss winter...yeah, yeah, I do, lol...Sometimes I crave for snow, specially around the holidays. I live in Cuenca-Ecuador now and the weather here is lovely, like spring all year round, sometimes warmer, but dry or colder, very comfy.
Thank you for your visit, I love it so.

  11. We've had more snow than last year, but not much worth shouting about. We moved last month, so I'm not real sure what the norm is around here.

  12. We had little snows so far this winter. I don't need the white stuff to make my winter a winter =) We're starting a streak of very cold temps this morning. A book and a blanket will be my friends till it warms up again! Blessings to you this day, Glenda

  13. We had rain all week and if it had been a bit colder it would have equated into three or more feet of snow. It finally changed over to snow last night and today I'm off from school. Yippee!!

  14. Well, we didn't get any snow here in the Arizona desert (up north, definitely), but we had a week of freezing weather with temps dipping into the 20's for the lows and 40's for the highs. Then, yesterday, after a mere 32 degrees when we woke up, our temps went scurrying back to 75 degrees for the high. That is much closer to normal winter temps for us. We lost several plants, even though we wrapped most things, and our citrus is going to need a good pruning. That is just about as much cold weather as these "desert rats" can handle....lol!

  15. I was excited yesterday because our area was supposed to get snow but it didn't happen. We don't get much snow so we were hoping for some. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving the nice comment. I lost my blog a few months ago and have had to start over from scratch so I really appreciate each follower and reader who takes time to drop by and comment. Hope you have a great weekend!

  16. Winter comes and goes quickly around here in Arkansas!!! We just had a Christmas day snowing of 10 " accompanied by an ice storm. Lots of trees were lost and 80% of the city was out of power for a week. Hillcrest Cottage's power remained somehow, but we had overnight visitors for 5 days. Tree branches are still piled up all over the curbsides. So...yes...winter made quite an appearance this yea, but, now. we have had our fill... wishing for spring.

  17. We went to our son and daughter-in-law's for dinner the other night. When we were driving there )only 30 minutes away) it was raining. I was helping Lindsay make some curtains for the new baby-to be's room and suddenly we heard something on the window. It was sleet and snow and wind and when we looked out our car was already covered and the roads were icy. Quite a big ordeal for the Carolinas!

  19. That's pretty scary...not having snow in CHICAGO this time of year! I see it's the same in other parats of the country. We've been unseasonably warm here in Florida...more warming to come?

  22. Unbelievably, we haven't had much snow here in NE Iowa either. Actually, there's none on the ground right now. My first winter in Iowa ('04/'05) it snowed in November and we never saw the ground again until spring. In fact, it snowed '12 inches the day AFTER the first day of spring. I seriously questioned why I was here. But I've learned to have a good winter attitude...and this year that hasn't been too hard. ;)

  23. NO!!! It hasn't arrived. Last week we were promised ten inches and we got nada, nothing, zero. Barely even a wintery mix.

My fingers are crossed for some blustery weather soon.

  25. Thank you so much for joining Grace at Home! You are the kindest, most gracious party guest! I've seen the way you've left notes of encouragement for others--bless you!

Can't believe you haven't had much snow in Chicago. We've had none, but that's not so unusual for NC!

I'm featuring you in today's Grace at Home party!

  26. My goodness, yes, winter is here, but it forgot the snow! If it has to be this cold, it's nice to look out to a blanket of crisp white snow and not brown grass. Sadly, I think my flowers/plants are taking a beating this year with such cold temps and their blanket of snow to protect them. I am so thankful for our nice warm house!

    Enjoy your weekend!
