A toast to ... boasting

I read an interesting verse this morning. Paul is speaking to the church in Corinth, when he says that one of his goals is ...

"that on the day of the Lord Jesus,
you will boast of us as we boast
     of you." (II Corinthians 1:14)

Last Sunday, Dave and I were in Minneapolis for the commissioning service of one of our young WorldVenture missionaries, (J and S) who are soon to begin their ministry in Europe.

It was a beautiful and encouraging morning, and as I read this verse, I realized this is exactly what they did.

Friends, family and ministry partners had come together from different parts of the world to boast about this young couple:

*the man who had led J to Christ

*the couple who took J on his first mission
       trip

*the pastor and his wife who mentored
       J and S

*a pastor from Europe who thanked them
for years of ministry through short term
       trips

Nine different participants, joyfully boasting. It was a beautiful thing.

Then, J and S spoke, also boasting of God's goodness to them through those in this church and their home church in Washington ... all the people God had used to prepare them for this moment.

I was glad it was Dave that was speaking that morning and not me, because I found myself very tearful ... because there is so much joy when the Body of Christ "boasts in each other."

Not ... comparing, putting down, gossiping, complaining, but ... boasting.

I want to invest in people in such a way that in the day of the Lord's return, we can boast in each other.

And, I want to boast in the many people that have invested in me.

How are you doing at ... boasting?

  3. I love this! Yes, we do have permission to boast with joy -- it all just matters the state of the heart from which the boasting flows.

    in Minneapolis last Sunday,
    I was in Chicago. Sounds

    much happier occasion and
    you came away inspired, which
    I love!

and support you offered in your
    last comment--I so appreciated
    it, and you.
