Cozy Fall Reading

My house is messy this morning. My good friend, Anne, was just here from Seattle for a lovely visit. She and I love to do house projects together.

We spent one morning working on Dave's office ... moving heavy book cases, coke collection and piles of dust. So, I have a huge stack of things that need sorted and to find a new home.

But, instead of working on that, I am continuing my huge reading jag. At the end of summer I was reading biographies from the library ~

     *Valerie Harper

     *Diane Keaton

     *Steve Martin

But now that fall is here and so beautiful, I am re.reading a wonderful series of books that I love. When the girls were little and Dave traveled, I used to read this series when he was away, because it gave me joy.

Jan Karon is the New York Times Bestselling author of the beloved Mitford Series. I love everything about these books and they actually make me want to be a better person.

I love Father Tim ... his heart, his generosity, his faithfulness to God and his congregation.

I love Cynthia his wife ... her spirit of fun and adventure and her creative love of her husband and his congregation.

And a whole lot of other great characters.

I woke up early this morning and finished the 4th book in the series and tonight I will be on to the next ... or maybe this afternoon.

What are you reading?

PS. A little Steve Martin trivia ... guess who his first girlfriend was? (Stormie Omartian)

  2. I love your book recommendations. I just finished "The Burgess Boys" which was great. I also just got "Impossible Odds" from the library--it's the true story of a woman who was kidnapped by Somali pirates and rescued by SEAL Team 6. Wow!

  3. I'm not reading much over here... I take books out of the library but never do read them before they are due back!
Love the trivia.. would have never imagined. I'd like to hear what Stormie has to say about that experience.
    I love your posts, Glenda...

  5. I think the Mitford series by Jan Karon is completely a joyful read. Father Tim, Barnabas his dog, Cynthia, and the whole small town cast of characters are delightful. I am reading The Snake Stone by Jason Goodwin today, the second in a series set in Istanbul long ago. Yesterday I completed Bad Boy by Peter Robinson, number 20 in his super police series.

  7. I have been telling my lovely Susan that I need a good book to read. I have checked out books from the library for the last six months and not one has peaked my interest. Normally I follow a personal policy to finish any book I start even when I don't like it. That policy has been on hold for several months. Thanks for the recommendations! I'll have to read the Steve Martin biography and put Mitford Series back on the nightstand. I read the Mitford series back in the day and loved Jan's writing. Thanks Glenda!

  8. I'm reading The Shadow King by Jane Stevenson...it's the second book in a trilogy...an historical novel about the Queen of Bohemia (The Winter Queen) and her link to an African prince traded for a slave. It takes place in the 17h century so I'm immersed in a delicious royalty clash with the everyday people of Holland, London, and Barbados.

    Blessings to you, Glenda!

  10. I'm reading Jane Kirkpatrick's new book, "One glorious ambition : the compassionate crusade of Dorothea Dix". Jane is a favorite author of mine and her books draw me into the lives of the real women she writes about. I loved the Mitford series. Time to read it again soon!

  11. Jan Karon's Mitford books are my favorite. It's been 13 years since I first began to read them. I think it's time for me to re-visit them too.

  12. I have so many books "on deck" as I did not read one for over a month and that is not like me at all. I am actually reading a "beach read" right now called Spring Fever by Mary Kay Andrews ~ I am enjoying it. Happy weekend.

  13. Smile...being from So California and having gone to high school in the same city as Steve Martin, I knew the Stormie Omartian connection. That's one amazing story he tells in his book....
What am I reading? "Lincoln" (from the movie), re reading Gates of Splendor Jim Eliot story, a piece of fiction by Sandra Dallas, 'Everyday Sacred' by Sue Bender are a few that come to mind here from the comfort of my bed...
Good luck on the organizing project!

  14. Glenda...you got me at Father Tim! I recall that you are a fellow fan as well and now you have me thinking that it is time to read them all again. I love that I smile each time I see the series sitting on my bookshelf. A lovely reminder of what is to come. I am reading 'Coal Creek' by Alex Miller, a book I picked up in Australia earlier in the week, he is an Australian author I have long enjoyed. I have been lucky enough to pick up a new book each time I visit. I do not even read the book jacket anymore, I just know that I am going to enjoy whatever he writes.
    Happy reading... xx

  17. Should I admit I never read a book in the Mitfield series? I did get one on CD from the library and couldn't get into it. I just finished Carole Brown's "The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman. I just started "Million LIttle Ways" and "Leading and Loving It." I always think I get a double portion on your book posts because I love reading all the comments!
