We Are A Bookish Family

We are a bookish family, yes we are. And I love the big book order that comes right before Christmas ... all ready to be wrapped and put under our tree.

The last few years, I have asked everyone what book they wanted for Christmas. Getting just the right one is always fun. This year, my dad send me money to do his shopping ... so I got to get two books for everyone. (double the joy)

But before I tell you the books I ordered, let me show you the books I received for Christmas.

lucky me
Here are the yummy books I got to give away for Christmas ~

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem and Other Things That Happened, by Allie Brosh (awesome title)

Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering by Timothy Keller

Betsey Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace

The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook by Ina Garten

The World of Downton Abbey by Jessica Fellows

Knock Knock Who's There: My First Book of Knock Knock Jokes by Tad Hill

Mad Hungry by Lucinda Scala Quinn

Judges for You by Timothy Keller

Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative by Austin Kleon

Well, we are a well rounded bunch, yes?

If you know our family, you can probably guess the recipient of each book. (And the knock knock joke book was for our buddy, Cole, not Dave. But they had fun reading it together.)

And, I saved the best book for last. My first book purchase for our grandaughter.to.be, due in 19 days.

A Baby's Blessing by Welleran Poltarnees ~ This book is full of beautiful pictures and wonderful blessings. A few of our favorites:

*let this baby be welcomed by many, loved by
many and known by a myriad of private and
       gentle names

*let this child be held and warmed and made
secure in this strange new world

*let all those who share in this babies growing
learn from its' laughter and joy.

We read this book of prayers aloud at Jenny's baby shower. Such sweetness.

Well, there you have it ... our Christmas books. Did you get any great books for Christmas?

p.s. A little parental warning ~ It our experience that when you teach your kids to love books, they will grow up and move to third floor apartments with no elevators. More than one time, too. There will be stacks and stack of books to carry up those many long flights of stairs. Thought you would want to know.

  1. Fun list, Glenda! Thanks for sharing! I love seeing what you are reading. The book we got for Christmas was Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Love it so much. I'm waiting for The Gifts of Imperfections to arrive in my mailbox any day now. The other book I have been reading and using with our young mom's study is Obtainable Expectations by Steve Hickey. So great too! Can't wait to hear baby news!! 19 days!? You will be a Grandma! A wonderful one too!

  2. I love Betsy-Tacy series. I have read it countless times.

I also adore The Gentle Art of Domesticity - it is one of 5 total books that has made my stack of books I am willing to move multiple times across the country. :-)

  3. I love your that you shared what you all got for your Christmas books! It looks like that is a beautiful book that you got for the precious baby too! I know she will become a book-lover too!

Our Christmas books included Killing Jesus and 85 Years of the Oscar. Dave keeps telling me I need to buy books on my IPad, but I still love holding a book in my hands to read. I know it would be much easier to move one IPad, but I just can't make myself switch yet!

  4. I didn't get any books for Christmas (that I can remember), but I have ordered a couple for myself recently. Carolyn Weber's most recent is on its way. And I'm in the middle of "Glitter and Glue" by Kelly Corrigan right now. Going to see her on Tuesday night! :)

  10. I'm so glad I love books! I wasn't a very good reader in my younger years, but somewhere along the line, I found I enjoyed reading for me and I really enjoyed reading aloud to others. I have several books to read on my Kindle. Working though them!
Bless you as you wait for that baby girl to arrive. So exciting! Our newest Grand comes in August.

  14. So you're a Downton Abbey fan? I was really thrilled when season 4 didn't leave us with shock a miserable shock. This ending was soft and gentle, leaving us with thoughts going back to Anna/Bates and Edith's conundrums...stay tuned. It's always a fun ride in such sumptuous settings
